Terminal

There is no friendlier blank space than the one after the prompt.
You type. The machine listens. Not patiently - it has no patience - but exactly. It does what you said. Not what you meant, not what you wanted: what you said.
This is the discipline. Precision in the face of a system that will not meet you halfway. You learn the language or you don't get what you want.
Novices find this cold. I find it honest.
There is a certain comfort in a system that has no hidden agenda. No dark patterns. No nudge toward something other than what you asked for. The cursor blinks. It waits. It will wait forever.
The history is there, above the fold: every command, every output, every error. A record of what you tried and what the machine said back. Not judgment. Just memory.
At the end of a long session, when the work is done and the last command has run, you close the terminal. The state collapses. Tomorrow starts fresh from a clean prompt.
This, too, is the discipline.
